SAE J1772 Type 1 plug is the conventional connector for AC EV charging in North America, Japan and South Korea. Single phase AC charging is carried out in Level 1 and Level 2 charging with the standardized Type 1 charging connectors.
As an AC charger, the J1772 has 3 main pins for carrying the current and 2 smaller pins (CP and PP) for communication between the EV and charging equipment. Of the smaller pins:
The proximity pilot (PP) pin tells the EVSE the type of cable connected to the socket (different cable thicknesses copes with different electrical current);
The control pilot (CP) pin provides bi-directional communications between the EV and the charging system. This pin checks the maximum current that the EV is able to take.
